about
Heavily influenced by the lyrically driven Death Cab for Cutie songs I was deep into at the time, Incompetent Man is the homunculus view of the inner heart workings of a man in love.
lyrics
The itinerary penned across the palm of his hand
Is smeared now that she is here sitting next to him.
The estuary flowing from his heart to her smile
Is bursting from within its banks just like the flooding Nile.
And all you see is new to me,
Adoring you as mine.
And learning of our symmetry,
I haven't had the time.
The incompetent man I call myself is mumbling from his lips.
His tongue and his teeth won't let him speak but tell of his ignorance.
He's nervous as a shaking leaf, and he trembles in her breeze,
But she flashes her reassuring smile, putting him at ease.
And all she knows is what he shows,
As they drive away from her place,
Rolling down the dusty window,
Lighting up her face.
The reddish-orange palette of the evening-coloured sky,
Will soon be lavishly chased away by the onset of night.
As he clicks and switches his headlights on to illuminate the road,
He gazes at her, sound asleep with her eyes gently closed.
And tonight they drive, their hands entwined,
Comfortable at last,
And only the other on their mind,
And in their love held fast.
